How to Prepare

Applications to run new domains on the PLATIPUS platform are expected to open in 2025.

Current Domains

Concept and protocol development

Have you considered workshopping your concept at an ON TRACK or IMPACT Concept Development Workshop? These workshops provide an invaluable opportunity to present your concept and receive constructive feedback from other perinatal trialists. Developing your concept at these workshops can inform and strengthen your trial/domain protocol and grant applications.

Apply for funding

Gather your team!

Look for funders that support research in your area of interest.

Check the funders website for upcoming grant rounds.

Review the criteria for previous funding calls and grant awards to understand what type of research the funder likes to fund, the criteria they use to assess applications and insight into where your application could be strengthened.

Talk to us

Do you have a new domain concept? A 'PLATIPUS New Domains Policy' is currently under development and will be added to this website once finalised.

In the meantime, if you would like to discuss whether your domain concept would fit on the PLATIPUS platform and how PLATIPUS infrastructure could benefit your research, please contact your region’s Trial Lead or email the PLATIPUS team at info@platipustrial.org

Adaptive Platform Trials: How Do They Work?

Adaptive platform trials are an innovative clinical trial design, where a Core (or 'Master') Protocol outlines the framework of the trial within which, all domains (similar to traditional clinical trials) are run.

This type of trial design allows accumulated data to be reviewed at pre-specified time-points (called 'interim analyses'). At each interim analysis, data is reviewed to assess the efficacy of treatments within each domain. A team of statisticians and clinicians who are independent of the trial, use pre-specified decision rules to determine whether the threshold for adaptations has been met or if sufficient data has been collected to answer the research question.

Adaptations to a domain might include the addition of new treatments, the removal of poorer-performing treatments, and/or changes to how participants are randomised to each domain.

Platform Infrastructure

The 'platform' of an adaptive platform trial can be likened to large, multi-use facilities, like Melbourne’s Cricket Ground or Auckland’s Eden Park. While expensive to build, once the structure, carpark and workforce are established, these facilities can be used for all sorts of events.

Adaptive platform trials have a single core protocol, single primary outcome, and coordinated infrastructure (including data management, statistical support, project management, health economics, etc.). This enables research questions can be added quickly and answered efficiently.
